Greg Avenue Pump Station and Hydroelectric Plant (HEP), and Foothill HEP, Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD)

Assisted with pump pre-purchase specifications and design reviews for replacement of two existing 55 cfs, 900 rpm, 3000 HP, VFD-driven horizontal split case pumps. Pumps were capable of operating in reverse as turbines to generate power, however, evaluation of costs and benefits determined that replacement pumps would not include power generation capability, but provisions were included to allow for future addition of a turbine. Existing pumps reached end of useful life and are being replaced in-kind. Pumps were specified to meet selected API 610 specifications for added robustness (e.g. bearings, vibration, etc). Participated in multiple specification review sessions with MWD and pump/motor vendors. Facility includes globe valves for PCS operation, and surge tanks for control of hydraulic transients. ProjectLine also assisted MWD with engineering related to refurbishment of the Foothill HEP to repair runners and wicket gates with corrosion and erosion damage. The Foothill HEP includes two 4.5-MW, 12-pole, 4160-V generators with Francis turbines that generate power from dropping water through MWD’s Foothill Feeder.
